Fundamentals for Professionals in Doctoral Education

The next PRIDE Network staff training is planned for April 3-4, 2018. The training builds on the many years of experience with the UNICA Masterclass and the findings of the PRIDE project.

  • A broad overview of the past and current trends in Doctoral Education;
  • Gain insights into roles and responsibilities of professionals;
  • Develop an understanding of the expectations towards professionals from supervisors and the academic leadership
  • Increase knowledge on setting up support structures for PhD candidates;
  • Strategies how to make the contributions of professional support more visible;
  • Learn about potential collaborations with partners;
  • Get to know key areas of professional support for different target groups within the university

Why join this course?

This course will guide you through the fundamentals of doctoral education – from major global reform trends and different national practices, to the spectrum of support structures in place in various universities. You will learn from experienced professionals in the field and have the opportunity to network with your peers. The training programme will comprise a mixture of presentations, case studies, interactive activities and discussions. The training also provides an excellent opportunity to learn in a small peer group together with experts who have accumulated specialist knowledge and can add additional perspectives. Over the two days, you will develop your skills and acquire know-how vital to set-up, run, and enlarge your successful and professional support center for doctoral education.

Who should attend this course?

This two-day course is for people who are relatively new to the area of doctoral education. The course is developed for professionals, no matter whether they work on the central or decentral level. We think that this training event is a good way to develop a strong foundation of knowledge in the area. Furthermore, the training will support you in advancing your career as well as in building up your international network with peers.

The training course will take place in the premises of the Office for Research Services and Career Development of the University of Vienna. Just find Berggasse 7 (1090 Vienna) and go up to the second floor.

Getting there:

The easiest way to get to the training facilities is to use public transport. Viennese traffic is heavy  in the morning, so we recommend not to take your car.

Metro: use metro line U2 and exit at station "Schottentor". The premises are within max. 10 minutes walking distance.

Tram: use tram lines no. 37, 38, 40, 41, 42 and exit at station "Schwarzspanierstraße". The premises are within a few minutes walking distance.

Get more information on the website of Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transport operator. The site is available in English and contains a route planning option as well as all maps and timetables.

Among the great rewards of the master class experience was the possibility to discuss with other participants from speakers and organizers to colleagues around Europe and even outside of it.
