PhD Monitoring via Surveys and Qualitative Methods

PhD Monitoring via Surveys and Qualitative Methods

Institutions are craving for data to better understand the current situation and needs of their doctoral candidates and more general their academic staff in order to better assess and evaluate the quality of support measures that are already provided within the institution to meet their needs. This monitoring can be done in several ways: (annual) surveys, focus groups… We don’t have to reinvent the wheel: there are a lot of good practices in Europe and beyond. Thus this working group would like to become a hub to share practical advice, questionnaires, specific (online) tools to ease the implementation process. The working group could also become the forum to discuss open issues, give feedback or answer specific questions other institutions are struggling with.

Quantitative Indicators for Doctoral Programmes

Quantitative Indicators for Doctoral Programmes

This discussion group aims to facilitate exchange of expertise in monitoring doctoral study programmes, target audience are professionals who want a better understanding of factors and processes influencing doctoral education. Indicators will be developed across three areas: (1) Benchmarking: Exchange will help to establish quantitative population indicators at your institution, funding, preparatory education or publication activity will be our main focus for development. (2) Comparability: When comparing data on a national/international scale, diverse programme structures, data granularity and varying parameter definitions can be challenging. We will thus concentrate on circulating programme characteristics among members, comparing datasets on well-defined aggregation levels and harmonising variable definitions. (3) Optimization: By looking closer at procedures and turnover times of administrative steps, we aim to develop suitable quality insurance indicators for optimization.
